This is a Patient Care Services vacancy located at the University Drive campus of the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center. The Registered Nurse in a Med/Surg/Acute Care environment is accountable for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating direct and indirect nursing care, and identifying outcomes for patients. The incumbent must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. The incumbent must maintain an active Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) status. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the unit Nurse Manager and will be expected to effectively utilize all available aspects of the nursing process to provide optimal care to Med/Surg/Acute Care patients. She/he must be able to utilize the Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and will practice within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of care relative to Acute Medical Care and the Patient Care Services line. The incumbent will be expected to anticipate emergencies, coordinate prevention, and respond appropriately to emergent situations as defined by Medical Center policies and procedures. She/he will be expected to participate in unit and hospital-based quality improvement activities and continuous education. She/he will have a demonstrated competency in the completion of core and practice-specific procedures as well as the developed skills with medication administration, IV infusions, PCA pumps, Crash Cart/Defibrillators, Chest tubes, Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI), Telemetry monitoring, Electrocardiograms (EKG), and Cardiac Rhythm interpretation. The incumbent must be able to appropriately assess the need for and utilization of safety devices in accordance with Medical Center policy. She/he will be responsible for providing health education to patients and families regarding current treatment, providing guidance to para-professional and non-professional staff as needed, and adhering to all Medical Center policies and procedures and Nursing competencies. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Nurse Manager. This is a Bargaining Unit position.
